Chapter Thirty-Five

Dev caught Sarah as she stumbled out of her chair. She passed out in his arms. He lifted her up and took her into the living room. Placing her down on the couch, he crouched beside her, brushing her hair back from her face and checking her pulse. She was breathing normally, her heart rate seemed steady. Her heart always seemed to race a little bit harder than his, he’d realised their physiology was different once he started noticing those things.

“I think she’s okay,” he said, as her mum and dad came into the room with Jess. “Could be a pregnancy thing?” The truth was he had no idea. She wasn’t really the fainting type.

Dread washed over him as Sarah’s lips began to move. He couldn’t hear what she was saying, but she was definitely talking in her sleep. Which meant her bond to the demon wasn’t severed.

“Shit.” He wondered if they realised what he did. Glancing at their faces he could tell her mother suspected something. Her dad was just apprehensive. Jess seemed confused. He took a breath. “She’s talking to the demon.”

Sarah’s mother sucked in a breath.

“How do you know?” Her father was frowning now.

Dev got to his feet. “It’s the only time she talks in her sleep. I don’t know if it’s safe to wake her.”

“It might not be,” her mother said. “There could be a very good reason for this.”

Dev wasn’t sure what she meant. There was nothing good about this. It meant her demon bond was still strong. He bit at his nails.

“Is she going to be okay?” Jess’s voice was unsteady.

Dev glanced at Sarah’s parents for the answer. Neither of them looked certain. He did the only thing he could, he moved Sarah’s legs and got on the couch beside her, making her as comfortable as he could. The second she woke up he’d be right beside her. He stroked her ankles as she muttered things he couldn’t pick up. “She’s going to be fine.”
